Why Isn't My Website Showing Up on Google?

You built a website. It looks fine. And when you search for your own business, it's nowhere to be found — or it's buried on page 4 behind directories and competitors. This is one of the most common frustrations for small business owners, and it's almost always one of a short list of fixable problems, not a mystery.

First: are you searching for the right thing?

Searching your exact business name should surface your site pretty easily, assuming it's indexed at all. If you're searching a general term like "plumber Chandler AZ" and not finding yourself, that's a much harder, much more normal problem — ranking for competitive local terms takes time and content, not just a working website. Don't confuse "not ranking #1 for a broad term" with "not showing up at all." They have different causes and different fixes.

The common reasons a site isn't indexed at all

Google hasn't crawled it yet. A brand-new site can take days to weeks to get its first crawl, especially with no existing backlinks pointing to it. You can speed this up by submitting your sitemap in Google Search Console and using the URL Inspection tool to manually request indexing on your key pages.

A noindex tag is telling Google not to. Sometimes left over from a staging/development version of the site that never got removed before launch. This is invisible to a normal visitor — you have to check the page's source code or run it through Search Console to catch it.

The content is empty by the time Google looks at it. Some websites render their actual text and headlines with JavaScript, after the initial page load. If that content doesn't exist in the page's initial HTML, some crawls will see a blank page — no text, no heading, nothing to judge or rank. This is a real, common bug in sites built with modern frameworks that weren't configured carefully, and it's invisible unless you specifically check.

Your site migrated and broke old URLs. If you switched platforms (WordPress to something else, or vice versa) without redirecting the old URLs to their new equivalents, Google keeps trying to recrawl dead links, and your actual new pages can get deprioritized in the process.

The common reasons a site is indexed but never seen

No Google Business Profile, or an incomplete one. For almost any local business search, most of the visible real estate on the results page is the map pack — three business listings pulled from Google Business Profiles, not organic website results. A perfect website with no Business Profile is invisible for exactly the searches that matter most.

Thin or generic content. A homepage that just says "Welcome to [Business Name]" with no real description of what you do, who you serve, or where, gives Google very little to match against actual searches.

No local signal at all. If your site never mentions your service area by name — city, region, neighborhood — Google has no strong reason to show it for local searches, even if you'd genuinely serve that area well.

How to actually check, not guess

  1. Search site:yourdomain.com in Google — if nothing comes up, you have an indexing problem, not a ranking problem.
  2. Put your homepage URL into Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool — it will tell you directly whether the page is indexed and why, if not.
  3. View your page's source (right-click → View Page Source) and search for your own headline text — if it's not there, your content may not be reaching Google.
  4. Check whether you have a claimed, complete Google Business Profile — if not, that's very likely your fastest win.

If you've checked all of this and you're still stuck
